  CO-0245 A carved and painted dog bearing a torch in its mouth became symbolic for the Dominicans.  Saint Dominic's (Light of the world) mother was the Blessed Joan of Aza who, while pregnant had a vision that her unborn child was a dog who would illuminate the world with the torch it carried in its mouth.  Tyrolean, Early 19th Century.
